White adipose tissue (WAT) stores excess energy (lipids, fat) and Brown adipose tissue (BAT) dissipates the stored energy as heat. Research evaluated their different roles.
Over the years, studies demonstrated that mild cold (15C) activates brown adipose tissue effectively compared to simulant compounds like ephedrine or saline. The cold requires to be a non-shivering thermogenesis temperature.
This 2017 research explored BAT distribution on the human body, its distribution (pictured above in Red and Blue) and how to quantify both its volume and its metabolic activity.
There are numerous studies about obesity and weight loss. When brown adipose tissue protects against body fat accumulation, a research in 2013 examined the therapeutic side of BAT to fight human obesity.
In 2011, a publication examined glucose intake induced in BAT by cold and when activated by cold, BAT dissipates energy in a perfusion-dependent way, exhibiting new metabolic response from cold and brown adipose tissue.
Cardiovascular disease risk is higher with obesity, study investigated the role of Brown Adipose Tissue dysfunction in cardiovascular diseases.
There are new studies investigating Brown Fat and other diseases: BAT & osteoporosis and its relation on bone density ; relationship between the decline of brown fat with age and development of Alzheimers and treatment of cancer by activating brown fat (BAT activated with cold "competed" with cancer cells for glucose).
The focus is to have a healthy and well-balanced diet as nutrition is vital for the body. Rich in iron, brown fat comes from food like meat & seafood, whole grains, leafy vegetables and beans.
Cold showers & ice baths are healthy for different needs, however if activating BAT is the aim, then they are too cold inducing shivering. Ice can burn the skin with frost bite. Ice vest or waist trimmer offers temporary results, white fat will come back.
Recent studies did not demonstrate that activity alone will stimulate brown fat notably. New workouts in cold setting (studios or outside between 7C & 15C) are being developed to help burn more calories and fat.
